Summary
John Launer is a family physician, family therapist, educator and writer based in London, UK. He taught English in Kenya and majored in English literature at Cambridge University before qualifying as a doctor at the Middlesex Hospital, London University in 1978. Following training in family medicine he worked for over twenty years in a family practice in Edmonton, north London, an area with high levels of social deprivation. As a family physician he developed a particular interest in working with couples and families, and subsequently in narrative medicine.
In 1994 he completed training in family therapy at the Tavistock Clinic, the leading institute in the UK for psychological therapies and organisational psychology. He was appointed to the teaching staff there in 1995, as one its first two family physicians. Together with Caroline Lindsey, he developed the model of interactional skills “Conversations Inviting Change”. John has run workshops and lectured widely both nationally and internationally on “CIC”. In the last few years he has taught widely in Europe, Israel, Japan, the United States, Canada, Australia and elsewhere, as well as teaching and carrying out academic supervision at universities in the United Kingdom.
Through his interest in education, John was appointed in 2003 as an associate dean in postgraduate medical education at the London Deanery (now part of Health Education England.) Initially working in the general practice department, he later moved to faculty development, where he led a team of around twenty educators running courses in essential and advanced supervision skills using “CIC”. He also led the Educational Team Development Service, visiting hospitals across London to help teams of clinicians improve their teaching skills. He currently works as a programme director for educational innovation in primary care (across most of London) and for multiprofessional clinical supervision (in Kent).
John has written and edited several books including Narrative-Based Practice in Health and Social Care: Conversations Inviting Change (Routledge) and How Not to Be a Doctor: and other essays (Duckworth), commended as a book of the year by the British Medical Association. As well as numerous articles on family medicine, family therapy and medical education in peer-reviewed journals, he is an active medical journalist. He wrote the ‘Coda’ column for the international medical journal QJM from 2002 to 2008, and now contributes a regular column to the Postgraduate Medical Journal where he is an associate editor. Together with Lucia Sommers from the University of California in San Francisco, John has edited a book for Springer Publishing entitled Clinical Uncertainty in Clinical Practice: the Challenge of Collaborative Engagement. He has also written the first full length biography in English of the Russian psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Sabina Spielrein: ‘Sex versus Survival: The life and ideas of Sabina Spielrein.’
